Mobility has today a major impact on the urban structure. It has a key action on the development of the city. The motorized means of transport answer to the main part of this need of mobility, households privileging the car to the detriment of public transportation network, whose role encounters stagnation or decrease. However, the public network has a dual aspect. On the one hand they are marginalized and used by a part of the population in the last resort. On the other hand, the political powers grant them the priority over the car. They are even conferred a power in matter of urbanism. The main idea is to confront the urban transport and the mobility of the population. Is there an homogeneous supply on the whole officially covered territory ? Does it offer the same possibilities for all to circulate within the urban space ? Does it give an advantage to some categories of population ?</text>

<text>This paper examines the consequences of geographical mobility on family structures and nuptiality, and more specifically on endogamy, through a comparison of heads of households who migrated and of those who never left their native village. Slight differences are observed, but for those who migrated, neither the traditional model of family nor nuptiality are influenced by migration.
For the second generation, things are more complex. Children of migrants spending their holidays in the village are different from those born to migrants who definitively returned to Portugal, who in turn tend to be close to those born to non migrants. As shown by data on education, citizenship, place of residence, children living abroad seem to wish to integrate into the host country, but this does not imply a rejection of their country of origin, as proved by the frequency of visits to the villages.</text>

<text>In this paper we use geographically referenced data for two metropolitan areas in the U.S. to test hypotheses about the homogeneity of gated communities and their link to segregation. Based on methodology developed by Renaud Le Goix in his study of Los Angeles area, we investigate homogeneity in three aspects: race/ethnicity, economic class and age. The results indicate that gated communities are mostly homogeneous enclaves. Their relevance to segregation patterns is structured through buffer zones: stronger social discontinuities cannot be found matching gated communities boundaries, but at a certain distance from the walls. Overall, gated communities lead to increased segregation by reinforcing the already existing levels of racial residential segregation in each metropolitan area.</text>

<text><div>The purpose of this volume is to treat the progress of history, civilization and urban development of China together in order to demonstrate the unique qualities of Chinese civilization.<br /> <br /> The author uses historical dynasties as the vertical dimension, starting from the pre-urban origin of round-moat village settlements of the Yangshao Period, until the most recent transitional city under the present &ldquo;socialist market system&rdquo;. There are a total of 13 chapters, covering a time-span of roughly 6,000 years.<br /> <br /> The book also discusses the theoretical context of the uniqueness of Chinese urban evolution and compares it with experiences in the West. It comprehensively treats major events, economic developments, territorial changes, and developments in technology, art and culture, military as well as administrative systems in the dynasties as urban change dynamics. The material therefore succinctly covers 6,000 years of Chinese cultural history.<br /> <br /> Besides using a large amount of Chinese literature &mdash; including materials on recent archeological finds &mdash; the volume explores substantial Western literature on relevant issues with the purpose of putting the Chinese experience in a global context.<br /> <br /> The author has included in the volume over 100 maps and line drawings selected from his collection accumulated over 30 years as a university lecturer and researcher of urban geography and the Chinese city. They provide vivid and readily apprehensible illustrations for illuminating key points on the structure of the Chinese city and the geopolitical situation of China in major historical periods. They also add exquisite detail through graphic techniques to the textual treatment of the subject matters, and are in themselves visually appealing, adding unique dimension to the volume.<br /> <br /> The volume targets a wide spectrum of readers, and will appeal to anyone interested in the culture and civilization, cities, urban planning and economic, philosophical, political and historical developments of China.</div> &nbsp;</div> <b>Victor F. S. Sit </b>is currently Founding Director of the Advanced Institute for Contemporary China Studies at Hong Kong Bapist University, and a former professor in the Department of Geography at the University of Hong Kong. He has authored and edited more than 40 books and published over 100 papers on urban studies themes.</div> &nbsp;</div> &nbsp;</div> &nbsp;</div> </text>
