The structure, the importance and the programmed end of social housing, especially social housing assigned by the city housing departments, are then illustrated in detail with results from a recent study on the regional housing market of Hannover. Major distributional effects (commodification, residualization, marginalization and recentralization) are discussed, and conclusions for communal housing policy presented.</text>

By exploring our capacity of capturing an emotional and behavioral experience of ourselves and our space through sound, this investigation raises questions about the resonance, the orientation, and the expansion of the body's limits through sound in space. "Auditory Spatial Awareness in Action" is staged in urban spaces and more specifically in "non-spaces" (Augé, 1992). It reveals itself to be not only a search for our memory through sound but also the experience of an aural spatial memory.</text>

<text>Following decades of sweeping social change, a 'new' Thai middle class emerged to become the main agents of the mass demonstrations which have rocked Bangkok for the better part of the past four years. Yet, the academic literature reveals a marked paucity of data on the urban middle class, and on Bangkok's systems of stratification. This dissertation addresses this lacuna with research based on eighteen months of ethnographic fieldwork in Bangkok. My investigations suggest that an indigenous spatial-symbolic matrix, encapsulated in centralising and hierarchising mandalic principles, continues to inform both cultural understandings of stratification and the socio-spatial structure of Bangkok. However, traditional status distinctions are now pervaded by the idiom of material wealth introduced by the forces of global markets. Today, life in Bangkok is framed by a hierarchy of affluence which echoes the numerical precision of the premodern sakdina system of status differentiation. Accordingly, I argue that the notion of the 'urban-rural divide' popularly used to describe the conflict obscures a more complex reality in which city and countryside are linked by reciprocal relations within both urban and national systems of status and class. This is clearly discernable in the nature of everyday interclass relations in Bangkok which have been exacerbated by contemporary diminishment and marginalisation of upcountry Thais by the urban middle classes. It is an incendiary dynamic that has been exploited to tremendous effect in the current political power struggle. I demonstrate that the middle class is significantly stratified internally, and explore how middle class culture and identity are drawn in large part from their understandings of status practices of elites. Much of this takes place in the public spaces of the city's scores of shopping malls, which articulate a local vernacular of prestige where hierarchical power relations are inscribed in urban space. Structural constraints and the societal privileging of wealth and connections are constant challenges to middle class aspirations for upward mobility, and the Bangkokian middle class harbours no illusions of Thai society as a meritocracy. This disenchantment has been channelled into a churning politics of resentment with demonstrably explosive potential. Ultimately, however, I argue that middle class discontent will contribute little to reform while the majority of individuals feel their only avenue for social mobility is to negotiate a pre-existing system of stratification which many perceive as unjust.</text>

<text><div><b>Abstract from the publisher : </b></div> &nbsp;</div> Cities are propellers of sustainable growth, theatres of values, schools of skills and abilities, beacons of culture and temples of citizen duties and rights. Aristotle called them &ldquo;built politics&rdquo;, places which have the noble aim to offer citizens a fulfilling and worthy life. Cities have always been beehives of cross-fertilised creativity, the only places where people and resources congregate at a point beyond which synergetic effects become more important than the simply additive ones. The book offers a 360&#730; view of the challenges facing cities at the dawn of the millennium in terms of growth, governance, environmental well-being, social inclusion, science, culture and the arts, urban renaissance and planning. One year after the crisis that started in 2008, the book presents responses to overcome the crisis of values and engage in a sustainability path from European and world cities. It tries to distil useful messages for all cities wishing to adopt bolder and better policy initiatives. Each chapter focuses on an essential dimension of the sustainable city and presents, in a nutshell, visions and actions of cities that herald meaningful far-reaching change.</div> &nbsp;</div> <b>Voula P. Mega </b>holds a PhD from the French Institute of City Planning and has gone on to work on issues of sustainable development at the Organisation of Economic Co-operation and Development in Paris and publish extensively on the subject.</div> &nbsp;</div> </text>

</text>

<text>The article analyses restricted and gated streets in both different context, Nantes in France and Recife in Brazil. This double analysis minimizes the effects of context and tries to perceive generic meaning in the restricted city. Starting from observations and interviews with the representatives of local authorities and the dwellers, several examples are used to understand the installation of an obstacle which creates a border and imposes negotiation (not necessarily free from tensions) between the dwellers group to be formed and the local authorities. This limit preserves a community of interest, more than a social affinity community. This kind of stability can be frictional or based on a soft consensus. Nevertheless, the ambiguous view of the public local authorities contains space for negotiation. This negotiation initiates urban governance based on malleable and porous borders (physical and legal). </text>

</text>

<text>French coastal areas are much sought after and generally subject to high residential attraction, which itself gives rise to major regional challenges. However, there is a mismatch between the scale of these challenges and the problematic evaluation of the coastline's appeal, especially in France. The prospect of drawing on data from the 2006 census provides an excellent opportunity to examine this question with a particular focus on the Atlantic zone, which has emerged as the most attractive stretch of coastline in France since 1999. After considering the key indicators in gauging residential attraction, the article assesses the extent of this process within the cities of the Atlantic coast then sets out the modalities (geographical origin and profile of migrants, favoured areas for setting up home), primarily through a comparison between the port cities of Lorient and La Rochelle. </text>

<text>It is hard to overestimate the scholarly impact of Saskia Sassen’s global city theoretical framework, which revolves around the impact of economic globalization on the social, economic, and political reality of cities in advanced economies. Yet, more than two decades of research dedicated to a ‘global city debate’ have left its main issues unresolved.

In Unravelling the Global City Debate Jeroen van der Waal argues that this is because scholars have hitherto merely interpreted urban change according to the central theoretical notions in this debate, and neglected to assess their empirical validity. Therefore he unravels the global city debate into the distinct theoretical notions it consists of and puts these to rigorous empirical tests by using data on one of the most urbanized and globalized developed economies in the world: the Netherlands.

By doing so, he shows that the standard research practice in the global city debate leaves much to be desired, for it yields both an under- and overestimation of the impact of economic globalization on urban labour markets in contemporary cities in the advanced economies.</text>

<text>This article investigates the potentials of satellite imagery for the mapping of air quality parameters. Concentrations of black particulates, sulphur dioxide and other pollutants measured in the city of Nantes with ground stations were compared to coincident Landsat TM6 data (thermal infrared band data). The black particulates concentration and the apparent temperature from satellite data are highly correlated. Finally, it is demonstrated that the spatial distribution of the black particulates can be mapped from remotely-sensed data. Possible improvements in precision of the mapping are discussed.</text>
