                <text>Au prisme de la diversité des pratiques spatio-temporelles, la mobilité constitue sans contestation l'élément majeur des relations sociales contemporaines. Si les pratiques spatio-temporelles et les formes des mobilités quotidiennes sont loin d'être homogènes, comment peut-on pour autant les décrire, les qualifier et les rendre plus compréhensibles ? L'échelle la plus adéquate pour analyser ces comportements peut être celle de l'aire métropolitaine car c'est en effet un espace qui résulte de ces mobilités et dans lequel s'inscrit la majorité des mobilités urbaines d'aujourd'hui. Cette thèse tend à établir une lecture de l'hétérogénéité de l'espace métropolitain grenoblois et de ses organisations, à travers l'analyse des pratiques des mobilités quotidiennes. Une meilleure connaissance et représentation des comportements de la mobilité quotidienne dans l'espace-temps constitue le coeur de sa problématique. La motivation essentielle de ce cadrage est la prise en compte de l'individu dans le contexte de mobilité qui lui est propre, avec toutes ses dimensions particulières. Une démarche originale vise à rendre possible une lecture et une analyse des mobilités et des activités ainsi que des disparités en cours, à travers une grande base de données quantitatives, l'enquête ménages déplacements (EMD 2002 sur la région grenobloise). Il s'agit d'une analyse secondaire des données d'un outil majeur des politiques publiques locales et qui n'a pas été utilisé jusqu'à présent pour analyser les formes des mobilités quotidiennes.</text>

                <text>

The paper considers how contemporary cities are constructed, framed and understood through vertical axes and dimensions. It charts upward trajectories in not only iconic high-rises, but in vertical gardens, townships, slums and urban farms, and in modes and methods of urban transport. The paper argues that these vertical manifestations and domains of urban life are not simply a response to space constraints and land values but mark and make visible new forms of social and political power, which disrupt notions of centre-periphery in traditional, flatter models of the city. Although recognising the validity and relevance of highlighting and analysing spatial dichotomies between vertical and horizontal urban worlds, the paper seeks to complicate such binaries. Drawing on recent research from Mumbai, the paper explores and identifies overlapping (or vertizontal) connections, practices and assemblages in three-dimensional city-making.

This wide-ranging, synthetical paper offers a cross-cuang view of a range of emerging research on the politics of verticality which appertain to contemporary urban spaces. Arguing that critical urban social science has long neglected the vertical aspects of urban life, the paper seeks starting points for a vertical turn within such research through engaging with recent research in architecture, political theory and cultural studies on the intersections of architecture and contemporary colonial power, the profusion of skyscrapers and subterranean architectures, and the proliferation of vertically-organised sensors and targeting and imaging systems within security, military and cultural circuits. These emerging developments are connected with earlier discourses on the politics of vertical architecture, aeriality and the vertical view within urban studies, architecture, cartography and geopolitics. The paper finishes with a reflection on the challenges of addressing the politics of verticality and aeriality within critical urban social science.

                <text>
Abstract from the publisher :

Vico and Naples is an intellectual portrait of the Neapolitan philosopher Giambattista Vico (1668–1744) that reveals the politics and motivations of one of Europe’s first scientists of society. According to the commonplaces of the literature on the Neapolitan, Vico was a solitary figure who, at a remove from the political life of his larger community, steeped himself in the recondite debates of classical scholarship to produce his magnum opus, the New Science. Barbara Ann Naddeo shows, however, that at the outset of his career Vico was deeply engaged in the often-tumultuous life of his great city and that his experiences of civic crises shaped his inquiry into the origins and development of human society.

With its attention to Vico’s historical, rhetorical, and jurisprudential texts, this book recovers a Vico who was keenly attuned to the social changes transforming the political culture of his native city. He understood the crisis of the city’s corporate social order and described the new social groupings that would shape its future. In Naddeo’s pages, Vico comes alive as a prescient judge of his city and the political conundrum of Europe’s burgeoning metropolises. He was dedicated to the acknowledgment and juridical remedy of Naples’ vexing social divisions and ills. Naddeo also presents biographical vignettes illuminating Vico’s role as a Professor of Rhetoric at the University of Naples and his bid for the prestigious Morning Chair of Civil Law, which foundered on the directives of the Habsburgs and the politics of his native city. Rich with period detail, this book is a compelling and vivid reconstruction of Vico’s life and times and of the origins of his powerful notion of the social.

Barbara Ann Naddeo is Associate Professor of History at CUNY : The City College of New York.

</text>

                <text>Video games allow complex systems modelling, revealing retroaction loops, replicating self-organization and the emergence of hierarchical organization, functional differentiation and social segregation through multi-level interactions. Recent trends focus on improving modelling tools' graphic quality and interface attractiveness and on using video games to facilitate urban studies teaching and research. This apparent convergence between simulation and video games is addressed through a selection of strategy and city builder video games. Comparisons reveal that simulations and video games point to similar results:, they both allow the simulation of complex urban processes, like hierarchical urban networks or urban segregation. Games even seem to allow going one step further, being often more comprehensive simulations. However, the main limitation of video games emerges from their didactic power: video games and simulation software implement rules and models in almost opposite means. Games induce players to learn the model but not to challenge or to produce new knowledge.</text>
