</text>

                <text>
Abstract from the publisher:

More than half of the global and around eighty per cent of the western population grow up in cities. This text provides a vivid picture of children and youth in the city, how they make sense of it and how they appropriate it through their social actions.

Considering the causes and forms of social inequalities in relation to class, gender, ethnicity, sexuality, ability and geographical location, this book discusses specific issues such as poverty, homelessness and work. Each chapter draws on examples from both the developed and developing world, and throughout the chapters, the book:

- contrasts experiences of growing up in the city
- discusses how social inequalities, together with societal perceptions of childhood and youth, shape experiences of growing up in cities for different young people
- examines how young people appropriate the city through social and cultural practices
- considers contemporary movements towards the role of children and youths in planning processes.

Children, Youth and the City argues that young people must be recognized as urban social agents in their own right. This informative book deals with complex theoretical arguments and relates key ideas to this topical subject in a clear and coherent manner. The text is enlivened throughout with global case studies, photographs, discussion questions, suggested reading and websites. It is an excellent resource for students of Human Geography, Urban Studies and Childhood Studies.

Kathrin Hörschelmann is Lecturer in Human Geography at the University of Durham, UK.
Lorraine van Blerk is Senior Lecturer in Human Geography at the University of Dundee, UK.

</text>

                <text>
Organisers' description :

The scholarship with regard to the process of urbanization in the context of globalization has been dominated by the "global cities" paradigm in which Saskia Sassen outlines the increasing centrality of cities as they become "command centers" in the expansion of global capitalism, destabilizing the older networks of governance that are embodied in the nation-state. As a result, much of the theorization on urbanization in the recent past has been focused on cities in the developed regions of the world such as New York, London and Tokyo that serve as the material and symbolic sites for global economic production. The cities of the developing countries therefore remain marginal to this theorization of the urban, either defined by the lack of full-scale globalization, or through processes that mimic the developments in the core, or as sites of increasing chaos, poverty and inequality.

This panel discussion brings together a diverse group of PhD students at UIC, from the fields of urban planning and design, criminal justice and public administration, conducting research in the cities of the global south. While their approaches might vary, they are all engaged in contributing to the production of knowledge on newly emerging global urban agglomerations and the concurrent shifts in the political economy, particularly urban governance. This reflects a demographic transformation of historical proportions wherein the majority of the world's urban dwellers will be in cities of the developing countries. Two-thirds of the world's urban population growth will be occurring in the cities of the developing regions of the world, bringing about rapid uneven distribution of incomes, the proliferation of slum cities, rising demand for urban infrastructure and investment -– physical and social. The discussants will debate some of the emerging contradictions and tensions faced by the cities of the global south and locate areas of further research. The thrust will be on the possibilities of constructing alternative theories of understanding this massive urban change.

Ratoola Kundu will be presenting on the transformations that take place at the urban fringes and the practices of informality that shape it and are in turn regulated by the policies of the local government as well as global flows of economic investment, using the case of the fringes of Kolkata in India as an illustration.

Kamna Lal will be investigating semi-formal institutional arrangement for delivery of urban environmental services in an Indian city and drawing out the changes in the relationship between political economy and the ecology of the city in a liberalizing environment.

Meng Sun’s presentation is on the possible material and social impacts of the Olympic 2008 summer games on the city of Beijing and the significance of "event" or spectacle driven development of urban centers.

Lan Wang will be dealing with the emergence of new global urban planning and design practices that are being rapidly transplanted into the New Towns of China's urban regions and the kinds of political, economic, socio-cultural changes that drive and are in turn shaped by these design practices of producing "global cities".

Barry Weisberg will be presenting on the need to reformulate an understanding of what constitutes safety and security with respect to urban populations and infrastructure of the mega cities in developing countries, focusing on Shanghai.

Ratoola Kundu, Kamna Lal, Meng Sun, Lan Wang and Barry Weisberg are PhD students at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
David C. For example, to specialists in urban history who have only a passing interest in Chinese themes, the three works by scholars based in the People's Republic of China (PRC) offer a rare glimpse into the way that cities are studied in what remains (though not for long, if trends in India continue) the world's most populous country. The editors of Urban History are to be commended for making these articles, all of which were originally written in Chinese, available to Anglophone readers. When read beside other recent translations of pieces on cities by PRC-based authors in varied fields, such as the city-focused writings of cultural critic Xu Jilin and the journalist and oral historian Dai Qing that have appeared in the lively online journal China Heritage Quarterly, they give a sense of some of the main contours in contemporary Chinese discussions of and debates about the country's modern urban past.

Contents:

Jeffrey Wasserstrom - Introduction
Christian A. Hess - From colonial port to socialist metropolis: Imperialist legacies and the making of 'New Dalian'
Liu Haiyan - Water supply and the reconstruction of urban space in early twentieth-century Tianjin
Peter J. Carroll - The place of prostitution in early twentieth-century Suzhou
Toby Lincoln - Fleeing from firestorms: Government, cities, native place associations and refugees in the Anti-Japanese War of Resistance
Xu Tao - Bicycle trade organizations in modern Shanghai
Xiong Yuezhi - From racecourse to People's Park and People's Square: Historical transformation and symbolic significance
Book reviews
Bibliography of urban history 2011
Index of towns

</text>

                <text>
Abstract from the publisher :

This book explores the history, the reality, and the complex fantasy of American and European Chinatowns and traces the patterns of transnational travel and traffic between China, South East Asia, Europe, and the United States which informed the development of these urban sites. Despite obvious structural or architectural similarities and overlaps, Chinatowns differ markedly depending on their location. European versions of Chinatowns can certainly not be considered mere replications of the American model. Paying close attention to regional specificities and overarching similarities, Chinatowns thus discloses the important European backdrop to a phenomenon commonly associated with North America. It starts from the assumption that the historical and modern Chinatown needs to be seen as complicatedly involved in a web of cultural memory, public and private narratives, ideologies, and political imperatives. Most of the contributors to this volume have multidisciplinary and multilingual backgrounds and are familiar with several different instances of the Chinese diasporic experience. With its triangular approach to the developments between China and the urban Chinese diasporas of North America and Europe, Chinatowns reveals connections and interlinkages which have not been addressed before.

Vanessa Künnemann is Assistant Professor of American Studies at the University of Hannover.
Ruth Mayer is Chair of American Studies at the University of Hannover.

</text>

                <text>Depuis le début des réformes, la Chine a procédé à une transition de son régime foncier socialiste à un marché foncier. L'Etat demeure propriétaire de la terre, et des droits d'usage des sols s'échangent en milieu urbain. Ce nouveau marché a été balbutiant dans les années 1990, il a créé des rentes importantes captées par les dirigeants locaux pour l'intérêt collectif et pour leur intérêt personnel. Une nouvelle économie est née de ce marché en Chine avec un marché noir et une corruption active, et une orientation des économies pour la croissance locale. Ce système engendre une urbanisation très rapide des terres arables qui effraie le gouvernement central et révolte les paysans expropriés.</text>

Michael Brookes takes an international comparative view, examining export-led growth in the contrasting economies of South Africa and China, setting a significant context for those articles which follow on urban settings. Richard Croucher and Lilian Miles present their view of the position of the enormous number of internal migrant workers in China, a subject closely related to the wider issue of social exclusion in Chinese cities explored by Anne Daguerre and Elena Vacchelli. A third article in this trilogy dealing with migration and social exclusion in Chinese cities is provided by David Etherington. In a fascinating and detailed article on the historic evolution of relations between the Chinese authorities, local Chinese people and the Portuguese in Macao, Kai Cheong Fok explains the origins of the ‘Macao Formula’ which has long provided an effective framework for interaction between China and the outside world. Mark Houssart provides a very different but also interesting cultural perspective on the China’s other key urban window to the outside world, Hong Kong, with an article on the Infernal Affairs film trilogy.

Contents:

Richard Croucher, Pingli Li and Hiroshi Okano - Introduction
Michael Brookes - Export-led growth in China and South Africa: Two distinct journeys
Richard Croucher and Lilian Miles - Migrant workers in China: Social exclusion, protection and representation
Anne Daguerre and Elena Vacchelli - Social exclusion in Chinese cities in the 21st century
Fok Kai Cheong (K.
