<text>
The purpose of this volume is to treat the progress of history, civilization and urban development of China together in order to demonstrate the unique qualities of Chinese civilization.

The author uses historical dynasties as the vertical dimension, starting from the pre-urban origin of round-moat village settlements of the Yangshao Period, until the most recent transitional city under the present “socialist market system”. There are a total of 13 chapters, covering a time-span of roughly 6,000 years.

The book also discusses the theoretical context of the uniqueness of Chinese urban evolution and compares it with experiences in the West. It comprehensively treats major events, economic developments, territorial changes, and developments in technology, art and culture, military as well as administrative systems in the dynasties as urban change dynamics. The material therefore succinctly covers 6,000 years of Chinese cultural history.

Besides using a large amount of Chinese literature — including materials on recent archeological finds — the volume explores substantial Western literature on relevant issues with the purpose of putting the Chinese experience in a global context.

The author has included in the volume over 100 maps and line drawings selected from his collection accumulated over 30 years as a university lecturer and researcher of urban geography and the Chinese city. They provide vivid and readily apprehensible illustrations for illuminating key points on the structure of the Chinese city and the geopolitical situation of China in major historical periods. They also add exquisite detail through graphic techniques to the textual treatment of the subject matters, and are in themselves visually appealing, adding unique dimension to the volume.

The volume targets a wide spectrum of readers, and will appeal to anyone interested in the culture and civilization, cities, urban planning and economic, philosophical, political and historical developments of China.

Victor F. S. Sit is currently Founding Director of the Advanced Institute for Contemporary China Studies at Hong Kong Bapist University, and a former professor in the Department of Geography at the University of Hong Kong. He has authored and edited more than 40 books and published over 100 papers on urban studies themes.

</text>

                <text>More than 1.2 million students have left China to study abroad during the past three decades of economic reform in China. In 2007 alone, China sent around 144,000 students abroad, 167 times of the number of students in 1978. This large scale of student migration has often raised debate on brain drain , because many of these student migrants do not return to China upon graduation. However, there has been a reverse trend in the past decade as China witnessed a growing wave of return migration. More and more Chinese students are coming back to China after their studies and work abroad due to the strong economic situation and promising career opportunities at home. These returnees are given the nick-name Haigui or, in English, sea-turtles. This doctoral research is therefore an academic inquiry to this emerging social phenomenon. While international migration is mainly researched on the national level, this innovative doctoral research seeks to understand the relationship between migration and global city formation. To do so, it analyses inter-city migration flow by applying a relational case study of circular student migration between Shanghai and Paris and examines the rationale behind return migration and the role of management/business student returnees from French business schools on Shanghai s pathway to become China s premier global city. This research reveals that global cities have become the strategic points for Chinese talents (students and skilled professionals) acting the role as sending, transiting and receiving sites, which are interconnected in the dynamic process of knowledge accumulation, contact making and network creation. Chinese student returnees contribute to the development of Shanghai by actively engaging in transnational activities including developing and maintaining cross-border organisation/corporate ties and personal networks, knowledge transfer, acting as global-local business and cultural interface, as well as enriching cosmopolitan and multicultural business and cultural spaces in Shanghai.</text>

</text>

                <text>This paper highlights the importance today of the spatial dimension within the analysis of parent’s education strategies concerning their school choices at the secondary school. This study is based on the two dimensions of the concept of spatial capital (J. Levy) : position capital and situation capital. It explores socio-spatial schooling practices of pupils between the ages of 11 and 15, living in Lille and attending a secondary school in 2006. The Lille example reveals the importance of taking into account the configuration of the local school provision. It also underlines the benefit of the multidimensional concept of spatial capital. In this way, control over the spatial dimension appears to be a capital in its own right, unequally distributed among social groups, which contributes to the production of schooling inequalities in urban environments. </text>

In terms of ambience, popularity embodies certain ambient characteristics as it reflects the image of a poor district, densely populated, abundant with touches of misery and vulgarity. Yet, the sensory experience in Choubrah contains pale vestiges of a glorious past. During the commented-walks, names of palaces, intensive green shadows, or dilapidated luxurious façades pop up and change our perception. These sensory traces unfold another face of Choubrah's atmosphere. They allow us to enter into its temporal depth by reactivating moments of the past. In other terms, navigate its palimpsest. This article is a trial to reveal the history of Choubrah from a sensory point of view by letting these traces speak for themselves.</text>
