For sixteen years William Whyte walked the streets of New York and other major cities. With a group of young observers, camera and notebook in hand, he conducted pioneering studies of street life, pedestrian behavior, and city dynamics. City: Rediscovering the Center is the result of that research, a humane, often amusing view of what is staggeringly obvious about the urban environment but seemingly invisible to those responsible for planning it.<br />
<br />
Whyte uses time-lapse photography to chart the anatomy of metropolitan congestion. Why is traffic so badly distributed on city streets? Why do New Yorkers walk so fast—and jaywalk so incorrigibly? Why aren't there more collisions on the busiest walkways? Why do people who stop to talk gravitate to the center of the pedestrian traffic stream? Why do places designed primarily for security actually worsen it? Why are public restrooms disappearing? "The city is full of vexations," Whyte avers: "Steps too steep; doors too tough to open; ledges you cannot sit on. . . . It is difficult to design an urban space so maladroitly that people will not use it, but there are many such spaces." Yet Whyte finds encouragement in the widespread rediscovery of the city center. The future is not in the suburbs, he believes, but in that center. Like a Greek agora, the city must reassert its most ancient function as a place where people come together face-to-face.</div>

City and Society, the journal of the Society for Urban, National and Transnational/Global Anthropology, is intended to foster debate and conceptual development in urban, national, and transnational anthropology, particularly in their interrelationships. It seeks to promote communication with related disciplines of interest to members of SUNTA and to develop theory from a comparative perspective.<br />
<br />
Articles reflecting applied as well as basic research interests are presented as case studies, comparisons, and syntheses based on literature review. City and Society also publishes individual reviews and review essays on books, films and exhibits. The pages of City and Society are also open to pieces of humanistic orientation, including historical, dialogical, narrative, poetic, and visual.</div>

<div><b>From the editorial by Petra Kuppinger :</b></div> </div> City & Society 23(1) includes four articles, and Leeds Book Prize acknowledgment essays by the 2009 (Bob White) and 2010 (Philippe Bourgois) winners. While the four papers were independently submitted, they could easily have been put together as a special issue about global circulation. The papers examine processes of global movement of people, ideas, goods, and things. They explore topics of migration, housing forms and types, fashion and cars in parts of the world that are more frequently debated on the pages of City and Society (China and the Middle East), and others that get less attention (Eastern Europe, here Hungary; and the Pacific Islands, here Guam). The authors look at mobility and circulation as engines of change, producers of continuity, shapers of identities, and makers or chaos. Krisztina Fehérváry examines how the single family house in Hungary represents postsocialist trends on Hungary. This type of housing both marks and negotiates the emergence of a new middle class and its respective lifestyles in the country. Tiantian Zheng explores the role of Korean and Japanese fashion in the production of new urban subjectivities and understandings of globalization and cosmopolitanism in China. Lola Quan Bautista analyzes the construction of housing or housing compounds of migrants from the Pacific island of Chuuk in Guam. Finally Kristin Monroe discusses traffic and circulation in Beirut. This research attempts to build a model to evaluate the economic development level of cities using a set of factors associated to the concepts of competitiveness and attractiveness. Traditionally competitiveness has only been related to rankings with a very limited contribution to regional and urban economics. At the same time, the concept of attractiveness is gaining more attention from economists who now define it in terms of competition for capital, people and government resources. Attractiveness is now linked to stages of economic growth to provide a broader framework to analyse the process in which cities are immersed to reach a higher standards of quality of life for their inhabitants. It is claimed that cities do compete with each not just for resources or people, but also for great events, resources from international organisations and institutions, prizes, infrastructure of high calibre, and even for an image among the public. On the other, attracting investment is not just reduced to companies from any economic sector. The theory suggests that making the city more attractive implies a competitive process to create the appropriate conditions for business to work in a stable environment. “Redefining” the cities’ image is useless if it is not accompanied by a total reengineering of the government’s activities, where support for business plays an important role. The empirical analysis begins with the presentation of the economic asymmetries among the sample of 40 Mexican cities. It is concluded that the economic policies of the central government in the last ten years have benefited those places which were already rich. Evidence is presented using the factors and variables of competitiveness and attractiveness with secondary data in order to illustrate the magnitude of the asymmetries among cities. In the second part of the analysis, two econometric models are presented. The first one intends to “capture” the variance of the 72 variables used in the experiment. The objective is to build an equation portraying urban economic development. However, as it was expected, the high statistical correlation among the variables led to a model including only 9, very few if the model is intended for simulating the impacts of decisions made by local authorities. The second model is constructed using all the factors and variables with the idea of being able to simulate as many as possible urban policies in a dynamic context. The results provided by the model are consistent with the results presented in the first part of the empirical analysis and seem to fit well the data for the sample selected.

Quito radically altered during the fin-de-siècle, growing from a small Andean hamlet into a burgeoning metropolis. This process increasingly took on a spatial dimension after 1908, when the completion of a railroad between the Ecuadorian capital and the port of Guayaquil accelerated the development of an industrial sector on the southern edge. Quito's elite abandoned the colonial center for mansions on the northern environs in ensuing years, propelling a clear socio-racial segregation. A master plan developed in 1942 codified this situation while incorporating the wide avenues and parks typical of the City Beautiful movement ever since Haussmann drove his boulevards through the slums of old Paris. Nevertheless, the plan avoided demolishing the old city, giving the city's segregation a temporal cast. This dissertation examines how perceptions of space, modernity, and memory influenced the production of the shifting - yet static - cityscape that developed between 1885 and 1942. It begins with a discussion of the panoramic gazes of cartographers and municipal planners, whose attempts to reorder the city according to the molds of science and progress disguised the perpetuation of traditional social inequalities. It next moves to urban dwelling with a discussion of everyday life across three city districts and a review of the architecture and acculturation of a Swiss immigrant family. A review of allegorical imagery follows, beginning with laudatory portraits of Quito as the locus of Ecuador's Spanish heritage and continuing with the contrasting conceit prevalent in liberal and socialist novels that the city represented a social battleground. Finally, it traces the development of a pastiche among chroniclers using the vignette to overcome a perceived division between modernity and tradition, often incorporating folkloric themes and narrative styles. By juxtaposing these fragments, the dissertation argues that Quiteños from across temporal, spatial, and social boundaries coped with the pressures of modernization by redefining the city as a nostalgic place populated by the ghosts of a fictitious past.
