                <text>
In this 2011 seminar at the Institute of Historical Research, University of London School of Advanced Study, Joseph de Sapio discusses fog in the representation of Victorian London, particularly from the perspective of tourists to the city. He argues that, beyond their use in the literature of the period, representations of London fog 'can provide an alternative environment for considering the relationship between the citizen and the urban system', as fogs sever the relationship between an observer and the urban environment. The paper is 'designed as something of a starting-point for exploring the ways in which these representations of the fog-bound city pose challenges to the ideas of the urban system based on vision and movement. It argues that the urban environment during a thick fog is considerably altered from its nominal, everyday state, and the set of practices by which the modern city is constituted in the observer's mind are, as a result, inverted in a theatre of the street'.

Joseph de Sapio is a D.Phil candidate in History at the University of Oxford, where he is researching the role of tourism in nineteenth century London, and its influence on the physical and social development of the city.

Only a few cities evoke those clear images that feed the mind and imagination of successive generations or represent for posterity the spirit of an age : Johnson's London, Louis Napoleon's Paris, Brecht's Berlin. And so also the Dublin of Yeats and Joyce. This "literary" Dublin has long fascinated specialist and student alike. And little wonder, for ever since the creative genius of her most famous son reincarnated the wandering Ulysses in the person of a Dublin Jew, the city on the Liffey has become a "world city" - a world city of the literary imagination. There is another Dublin, again a Dublin of Yeats and Joyce, but one that evokes harsher images and nurtures little of the interest reserved for the milieu of dramatist and poet. This, the nether world of tenement and slum, of the poor and unemployed, is in large part the subject of this study.

Anthropologists often use key figures, such as the street tough, the child witch, and the flâneur, as a means to elucidate, personify, and critique underlying dynamics of social and cultural transformation. It is a method that is widely used, but seldom scrutinised. In this lecture Joshua Barker uses examples from his research in the slums of Bandung, Indonesia, to argue that this method can make a powerful contribution to a comparative anthropology of urban marginality.

Please join us for a comparative and historical analysis of the gentrification of the Near North Side of Chicago.

Professor Bodnar will examine the communities that have replaced the Cabrini-Green housing ‘projects’ and the proliferation of similar kinds of residential planned developments -- particularly in US and European cities. This horizontal analysis will be complemented by discussion of the history of gentrification on the Near North Side and the unfolding of current redevelopment initiatives, which signify a new scale and configuration of generalized gentrification as it has come to be known. This line of inquiry also focuses on the public-private interface.

Judit Bodnar is an Associate Professor of Sociology, Anthropology and history at the Central European University. In 2010, she was an Endeavor Visiting Scholar at the University of Chicago.

                <text>
Abstract from the publisher :

In the 1930s and 1940s, as the United States moved from a rural to an urban nation, the pull of the city was irrepressible. It was so strong that even a photographic mission designed to record the essence of rural America could not help but capture the energy of urbanization too. To the City showcases over 100 photographs from the Farm Security Administration (FSA) project along with extracts from the Works Progress Administration (WPA) guidebooks and oral histories, to convey the detail and dimensions of that transformation.

This artfully grouped collection of photographs includes magnificent images by notable photographers Dorothea Lange, Walker Evans and Gordon Parks, among many others. Foulkes organizes this history of Americana into five themes: Intersection; Traffic; High Life and Low Life; The City in the Country; and Citizens to illuminate the changes in habits, landscapes, and aspirations that the march to cities encompassed.

As the rural past holds symbolic sway and the suburb presents demographic force, the urban portion of our history—why and how cities have been a destination for hope—recedes from view. To the City is a thoughtful, engaging reminder.

                <text>
