<text><div><b>Extract from the Introduction by Evelyn Schulz and Hiroshi Okano:</b></div> &nbsp;</div> The papers gathered here are the outcome of Creating Cities; Culture, Space and Sustainability: The 1st City, Culture and Society (CCS) Conference which took place in Munich, Germany, February 25-27, 2012, and was organized by Evelyn Schulz ( Japan Center, LMU Munich) in cooperation with Eveline D&uuml;rr (Institute for Cultural and Social Anthropology, LMU Munich), Irene Goetz (Institute for European Ethnology, LMU Munich), Franz Waldenberger ( Japan Center, LMU Munich), Gordon Winder (Seminar of Economic History, LMU Munich), and the Urban Research Plaza of Osaka City University. <br /> <br /> The term creativity seems to bridge a conceptual gap that is the result of challenges posed by today&rsquo;s demand for sustainable urban development strategies. Accordingly, the point of the conference was not so much to examine individual urban creative industries projects. Considering the many different urban development issues, such as shrinking resources, (in)stability, and rampant urban growth, the conference, rather, attempted to shed light on the heterogeneous forces at work and tried to forecast possible future developments. The conference approached the multifaceted and rather controversial creative city debate from various points of view. <br /> <br /> The conference&rsquo;s goal was to analyze the economic, social, political, and cultural requirements for urban development as well as the global dimension of such processes. The conference focused on the following questions: As far as urban development is concerned, how do growth, on one hand, and the necessity for social and ecological Sustain- ability, on the other hand, interact? How does a created environment affect social space? How should a city be in order to promote creativity? When it comes right down to it, what actually is creativity? Which impact does cultural diversity have on the creative output? How do cities approach social and cultural diversity? How do their strategies influence creative activity? Do these kinds of strategies mean a risk too or are they rather the engine behind an economically and socially sustainable urban development? How far can political forces really create a creative city, an urban environment that encourages innovation and economic growth? These and similar questions were discussed by means of a wide range of case studies from all over the world and pertaining to a diverse range of fields of study.</div> &nbsp;</div> <b>Contents:</b></div> &nbsp;</div> Evelyn Schlulz and Hiroshi Okano - Introduction</div> &nbsp;</div> I. <text> Examining how economics, geography, and politics interacted in the expansion and economic changes within the United States, this dissertation investigated the symbiotic relationships and their qualities among the economic transformations of an urban area and its surrounding hinterland throughout the nineteenth century. Specifically, it investigated how the economic and population changes within Toledo, Ohio, molded the development of agricultural hinterlands and how the condition and settlement of the surrounding rural areas shaped the economic changes of Toledo. The quality of transportation connections among Toledo and other nascent towns, market interactions among residents, and the relationships between land quality and usage provided for symbiotic economic development of urban areas and rural hinterlands. The ability to use certain transportation infrastructures, the condition of land, and the availability of natural resources determined the type, quantity, and strength of market connections among people, which influenced the amount and forms of economic change for the area. Conclusions of this study were drawn from analyzing census records, newspaper advertisements and editorials, agricultural reports, and business records and literature.

This research introduced a new paradigm of regional economic change named the “subregional model” which included a hub, local economic centers, small villages and farms, and links of various qualities. The subregional model also contained an environmental character explaining economic change. Land conditions not only affected land use practices but also prompted policymakers to enact improvement plans supporting new market interactions among people. Integration and strength of connections provided generative economic development with cities on a subregional level extracting natural resources from the hinterland to stimulate urban expansion through new businesses and growing manufacturing establishments.

The findings of this dissertation add to the understanding of economic changes through settlement, urban and rural development, and land use in United States history emphasizing connections whose number and quality greatly determined the pace and magnitude of economic change. Because most residents of the United States lived within systems of medium-sized economic centers surrounded by hinterlands, the study and interpretive analyses of places such as Toledo and northwest Ohio are fundamental to the understanding of the history of the United States.</text>

<text>This thesis focuses on one of the most controversial and ambitious urban regeneration policies of recent years – the plan to create sustainable communities via Housing Market Renewal Pathfinders (HMRP). Announced as a ‘step change’ in urban policy to overcome problems of low demand and abandonment experienced most acutely in nine former industrial towns and cities in the north and midlands of England, the Sustainable Communities Plan (SCP) (ODPM, 2003a) involves the demolition and relocation of mainly white, working class inner-urban communities. This thesis focuses on a year long moment in the process of regeneration in one such HMRP in North East England, known as ‘Bridging NewcastleGateshead’ (BNG) and draws from rich, detailed ethnographic case studies of three former industrial communities.

Originally, the thesis draws together critical engagements with the concepts of space, governance, community, sustainability and materiality to develop a relational understanding of urban regeneration. Starting with an understanding of ‘spaces of regeneration’ as spaces in the process of becoming this perspective moves beyond normative, prescriptive understandings of spaces as static and contained and subject to the process of spatial regulation from above i.e. power over. Rather than a straightforward process of spatial regulation to transform people and places, the process of regeneration involves uncertainties, negotiations, contestations and emotions between the multiple social, material, economic and environmental networks. The thesis has drawn together urban theories and empirical evidence (including historical and contemporary policy analysis as well as a range of qualitative methods) to illustrate the relational transformation of people and places. Governmentality provides the main conceptual framework. This leads to an in-depth exploration of the rationalities and technologies of urban regeneration from three perspectives in the empirical chapters - governing communities, demolishing communities and transforming communities. </text>

<text>Through the analysis of the regeneration process carried out in the centre of Barcelona, this paper aims to explore the social production of an urban atmosphere. From an anthropological point of view, what we call an atmosphere is to be understood in the sense of the experienced dimension of the urban space. That means not something just "given" but, on the contrary, "made" through the people's practices and uses, which, in turn, are not necessarily always spontaneous, but also induced, domesticated, forbidden, etc ; in sum, they are a cultural construction that must be analysed sectioning all the social forces that compose it. The Raval's case in Barcelona, a slum reconverted in a symbol of the ethnic mix and the cultural fizz, is emblematic of how an atmosphere can be planned and constructed.</text>
