Description

Abstract from the publisher:

Integrated City Making is a report by Philipp Rode, Julie Wagner, Richard Brown, Rit Chandra and Jayaraj Sundaresan of the Urban Age Programme at the London School of Economics and Political Science. In 2007, Urban Age undertook a research programme in Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi and Bangalore followed by the Urban Age India Conference in Mumbai, to understand and assess how these cities are responding to the challenges of growth, and to compare these approaches to those adopted in other cities throughout the world.

India's cities are at the forefront of a global shift to an urban society. Assessing various responses to the challenges of dramatic urban growth, Integrated City Making compares government, planning and transport in four Indian cities to those adopted in London, New York, Berlin and Johannesburg.

The four Indian cities have a population of 35 million people (78 million including wider metropolitan regions and Delhi's National Capital Region), and an economy valued at $360 billion within their agglomerations.
