Description

From the preface :

Many recent urban sociology textbooks have come close to abandoning the traditional concern of urban sociology, which is the community in urban society. Emphasis has shifted to individual adaptations to urban society or to characteristics of urban society. This book returns to an emphasis on the concept of community and integrates contemporary knowledge about local communities with an analysis of the nature and problems of urban society. The focus is sociologically sound, and, at least as important, it allows students to relate their own experiences to the analysis.

The theories and data needed to understand cities, communities, and urban problems are presented so that students with only a minimal background in sociology should be able to use this book. Complex theoretical issues are developed logically and clearly and are related to concrete examples. The materials and issues presented should be especially helpful to students working toward associate and baccalaureate degrees in such fields as urban studies, urban planning, and urban sociology.
