Description

Abstract from the 1968 edition :   Long regarded as the definitive study of the early history of the English medieval borough, this book presents a thorough review of the 'thorny question of origins' and the theories of scholars such as Carl Stephenson and Maitland. Professor Tait begins by considering the rise of towns in the Anglo-Saxon period before the Danish wars, and follows the process of fortification in response to the Danish threat, assessing its significance in the origin of boroughs. The second part of the study deals with the post-Conquest period and examines the growth of merchant and class guilds, the evolution of the concept of 'free borough' and the early development of the fee farm system. The latter is studied in great detail and in the light of the published Pipe Rolls. The book concludes with Tait's British Academy lecture on the study of early municipal history in England. First published in 1936, this was the second major work of James Tait (1863 - 1944), a seminal figure in the development of the school of history in Manchester and in Manchester University Press, and a scholar described by V. H. Galbraith as 'one of the most revered figures in English medieval studies'.   Alternative link to the book.
