Disparities of feminine activity.
The contribution of French women to professional life has increased continuously since 1968. The economic crisis which exists since 1973 has not reduced this progress but has checked the improvement in women professional situation. The gap between men and women can therefore only be reduced slowly. The regional analysis of women's work also reveals the persistence of great disparities. The mining and steel- working towns, the ports, the towns of Southern and Central France, propose various situations to their female inhabitants; depending as much on the existence of more or less open and structured employment possibilities, as on the varying attitude of employers towards the recruitment of female staff.

La participation des Françaises à la vie active a progressé de manière continue depuis 1968. La crise économique qui sévit depuis 1973 n'a pas ralenti ce mouvement mais freine l'amélioration de la situation professionnelle des femmes. Aussi les écarts entre les hommes et les femmes ne s'atténuent-ils que lentement. L'analyse régionale du travail féminin révèle également le maintien de fortes disparités. Les villes minières et sidérurgiques, les ports, les villes méridionales, celles de la France «médiane», offrent à leurs habitantes des situations variées tant en raison de l'existence d'un marché du travail plus ou moins ouvert et structuré que d'un comportement différencié des chefs d'entreprises en matière de recrutement féminin.
