La rue des Rosiers est, malgré l'existence d'autres quartiers à importante population juive, «le quartier juif» de Paris, pour trois raisons dont la mémoire est un composant essentiel : la longue histoire de l'implantation juive dans cette zone du capital, sa qualité de pôle d'attraction où des Juifs de toutes origines et tendances se croisent et se rencontrent parfois en même temps, parfois par vagues successives et finalement la réappropriation continuelle de la mémoire collective par chaque nouvelle vague d'immigration et par chaque nouvelle génération. Cette réactualisation s'opère à travers les fêtes juives qui rythment le calendrier du quartier : par la parole de la pierre et par les souvenirs individuels qui se fondent avec ceux de la collectivité et viennent imprégner le quartier tout entier.
The «rue des Rosiers» or the Reappropriated Memory.
In spite of the existence in Paris of several other neighbourhoods with significant Jewish populations, the neighbourhood of the «rue des Rosiers» is «the Jewish quarter» of the city. This is essentially due to three factors of which memory is intimately a part : the long history of the Jewish presence in this area which dates back to the middle ages, the role of attraction pole for Jews of all cultures, national origins and degrees of orthodoxy who, at the same time or in successive waves, pass through this neighbourhood, and the fact that this neighbourhood has become a symbol because each wave of immigrants and each successive generation renew their links with the past through the celebration of Jewish festivals, the recollection of the history of the various institutions -synagogues, schools, shops - and events which have marked the neighbourhood, and finally, by the transmission of individual memories evoked often by odors, tastes, sounds and which join with the collective unconsciousness to leave a lasting impression on the neighbourhood as a whole.
