Description
Historians have explained the extraordinary success of Jakob Twinger von Königshofen's chronicle (written 1382-1415) in the entire German-speaking area mainly by the use of the vernacular language. Yet the chronicle was written for the city council of Strasbourg (which may even have commissionned the work) ; this reason accounts for the rhizome-like structure and the presence of the theme of the city's origines and the comparison with Rome. This structure, very easily adaptable to the history of other towns, and the pedagogical qualities of the chronicle led to its unexpected popularity. Lastly, the article reconsiders the issue of nationalism and regional identity present in Königshofen's chronicle, often seen as an early example of German nationalism.Historians have explained the extraordinary success of Jakob Twinger von Königshofen's chronicle (written 1382-1415) in the entire German-speaking area mainly by the use of the vernacular language.
