Description
This lecture puts in historical context a group of rare photographs
by Bert Hardy taken in May 1942 during the Second World War.
The men depicted are just a few of the 10,000 Chinese seamen who manned the Merchant Navy ships, for Britain during the war, mainly Blue Funnel, Ben Line, and Shell.. The pictures show them in lodging houses, their poor living conditions, while they wait for the next ship. The lecture decribes how previously Chinese men had served in the British Army Labour Corps digging trenches in Falnders. Finally, the history of furtive deportations of legally resident Chinese former seamen in 1946-1947 is discussed.
