Description
The site of Javols-Anderitum corresponds to the administrative centre of the civitas of Gabales people (current Gévaudan) in roman period, which is situated between Aubrac plateau on the West and Margeride in the North and in the East. In 1996 a global evaluation program was engaged in which pedological and palaeoenvironmental aspects are of a main interest beside archaeological investigations. More than 250 bore-holes were realized, distributed on and beyond all the actually known surface of the antique town (about 25 ha). A single phase of massive erosion was recognized during VI-VII centuries. Would it be there the impact of the climatic degradation which would have been revealed in the Mediterranean zone? More probably, one could there see the disastrous effect of a too strong anthropic influence, by a massive deforestation and a systematic cultivation around the city. Datas show that this erosion existed since the most prosperous period of the antique capital: would it be the abandonment of necessary terraces to fight the erosion of hillsides and drainages which is the cause of this intensive erosion crisis?
